"EATING OFF THE SUSHI TRAIN"

Do you take everything off the sushi train when it goes passed you? I know we all have at one point, don’t worry, don’t be ashamed, we’ve all been there! Every season we are bombarded with articles and even videos on “how to be up to date with the latest trends” and “what to buy next season to be on top of it.”

Fashion trends are like eating at a sushi train, you just need to make sure you know you like it. Vogue’s article on 2024 spring trends is one of them.

Vogue is one of the world’s leading fashion magazines in the world, it has impacted the industry tremendously and has become its voice for decades. I remember growing up and watching ‘Devil Wears Prada’ by David Frankel for the first time at home after renting it from blockbuster and wanting to work at Vogue because of the intensity and how rewarding it could be. I would also spend hours of my day as a child designing and drawing clothes I had read from articles on Vogue about what was good and what wasn’t.

I’d say I spent a fair amount of time reading and analyzing almost every detail of what the journalists would say. A daily ritual I might call it. I became stuck in a black hole of creating and even applying what I’d read, on myself. I didn’t care if I wasn’t sure but if vogue had told me that it would be the next “thing” I was the first one to try it.

Now the thing is, I have nothing against vogue. I honestly feel it has generated so much creativity and has inspired me so much in expression through clothing and art. What I want to get at is, we are given and told so much in our daily basis we must remember what to take in and what to leave on the sushi train.

I know it’s hard sometimes because it looks amazing on the influencer! Or even how they described it in the article! But I just want to remind you, as a sister. Girl, I get it, I know those micro bags by Jacques look so cute! But it's only going to fit your favorite lipstick. It’s a “no” for me and my “forever wardrobe.”

Vogue has been around for the longest time. In fact, since the ripe year of 1892 (Shinkle, 2016.). It has evolved to become one of fashions most influential voices in the industry. It has moved to feature artists, celebrities to models and even athlete. (Shinkle, 2016.) Every season vogue creates an article on trends and what to look out for in the next fashion season, it highlights the highs and lows of fashion week and focuses on colors to look out for and to keep in mind.

The magazine corporation has always been on the ball when it comes to finding patterns amongst the most respected designers in the industry in order to find out what’s the next best thing. It has always been a significant impact on the fashion industry because of how critical the magazine can be, “make or break” for brands during fashion week.

Although the significance of their impact, it has become often clouded too much of readers judgment of what they see and encouraged them to become consumers rather than apperceptions of the art form. (Santos, 2021.)

In girlhood we must protect one another from any cringe eras we may face. Let’s all be reminded not to eat all the sushi off the sushi train!

xx
