Have you ever been so excited for something you plan an outfit in your head weeks in advance, then the day comes, you try it on, and it doesn’t suit? Cause, same here, girl. I have. I get you. Nothing’s worse than that feeling. Styling yourself can be difficult, it comes with a lot of experimenting, trying things on and leaves your room like a storm had just gone through it.

When I was little I would spend hours in my parents’ closet trying out new styles and different types of clothes… and then... leave their closet with the biggest pile of clothes on the floor. Yes, I was my parents’ dream child-haha! I have always been so drawn to creating and expressing through fashion. The experimenting with colours, shapes and proportions have always been an outlet and a way for me to feel confident in myself. I know many of you here would have had similar experiences when you were little.

Finding your style can be messy, it can be tiring, but it is also so rewarding. It can help become an outlet and can benefit mental health (Editorial Team, 2021) significantly. When I was 16, I moved to Thailand, this transition into a new country with a whole new culture to what I’d only known was very hard. I’d fallen into depression but found styling myself as a passion.

I began to pursue my newfound love and began to want to get up in the morning again and even being mentally able to go out. Finding people that inspired me through social media and everyday life was a big help! Id’ highly encourage you do it too if you’re feeling like you’re in a rut creatively or even in general.

Hot tip! don’t be afraid to try things new. Make a moodboard (DeGuzman, 2023) on Pinterest! Watch videos! Get inspired. When I found inspiration, it was easier for me to gain a clarity on my style.

How do you stop yourself from buying trends? I touch on this on the blog post ‘Eating Off The Sushi Train’ breaking down how and what to take from fashion trends. In simple terms. When you’re getting sushi from a sushi train, you get what you like and leave what you don’t like. Just like trends take inspiration but only take what you’re certain of and what fits your aesthetic. Although, try things out! I’ve just found thinking like this has kept me from spending my whole savings on micro trends, instead investing in timeless pieces that suit my body type and aesthetic! Don’t be afraid. Try things out! Just be mindful.

xx
